Floyd T McCurdy

Rhome ~ Floyd T. McCurdy, 87, a farmer/rancher, went to be with our Lord Monday, February 06, 2017 at his home near Rhome, Texas.

His funeral is 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Rhome church of Christ with burial in Thurmond-Fairview Cemetery in New Fairview. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Roy H. Deaver will officiate. Leon Fuqua will lead singing.

Floyd was a godly man who loved his family, country and neighbors. He was known for his story telling, big smile and work ethic. In addition to farming/ranching, he was involved in rental property, gas production and worked for the Rock Island and Union Pacific Railroads for 26 years as a brakeman. He served his country in the United States Navy.

He was born on December 21, 1929 to Rufus Cal and Ava (Chambers) McCurdy in Decatur, Texas. His family settled in Wise County in 1899 and their cattle brand is a featured historical brand at Texas A&M University. Floyd had five siblings: Allan, Beatrice, Calva, Dorothy and Elton. All preceded him in death. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1947. He attended North Texas Agricultural College, part of the Texas A&M College system for one and half years until he joined the U.S. Navy and served on a submarine during the Korean War. On January 23, 1954, in Fort Worth, he married Peggy Logan, the “prettiest girl in the county” who was the love of his life for 63 years.

Floyd and Peggy had three children to whom he conveyed the values of hard work, love of the land, and dedication to family. He and Peggy continued the family tradition of road trips to historic sites across the United States with their six grandchildren. The kids were captive to his endless storytelling and recitation of historical facts, but at least baths were optional if you took a dip in the hotel pool.

Floyd never met a stranger and never failed to serve his community. He was an elder at the Rhome church of Christ and was instrumental in the World Bible School missionary work in Chennai, India. He also served as deacon, Bible class teacher and song leader, where you could hear his beautiful tenor voice. He was president of the Thurmond-Fairview Cemetery Association for 38 years. He was active in the Wise County Democratic Party and was honored in 2010 with a ceremony for his many years of service. He served on the Northwest ISD school board and announced their high school football games for many years. He was proud to be a member of Woodmen of the World and the Texas Farmers Union.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Peggy McCurdy of Rhome; his sons, K.C. McCurdy and wife Kim of Rhome, Kyle McCurdy and wife Kendall of Graham; his daughter, Amelia Martin and husband Chris of Austin; his grandchildren, Kellan McCurdy, Luthien McCurdy, Julia Martin, Daniel McCurdy, Louisa Martin and John McCurdy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Olivia, Tavisha, Sharon and Robert who cared for Floyd in his home; Dr. Hoover and his staff; and Irma, Kelly and Allison at Renew Home Health. Thank you for your diligent care and love.
