Marita Marney Obituary

Bridgeport ~ Marita Mae Marney, 84, loving wife and mother, went to be with our Lord Monday, June 11, 2018 in Bridgeport.

A celebration of Life Service is 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Bridgeport with a private family burial in East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

Gene Oyler and Rev. Jack McBride will officiate. Pallbearers include Michael McComis, Jordan Logan, Elisha Marney, Jared McComis, Gideon Logan, Reagan Marney, Joseph Marney and Nathan Graves. Honorary pallbearers include Aaron Logan, Nolan Graves, Nevan Graves and Benjamin Marney.

Marita was born on October 14, 1933 to William Earnest and Opal Lorraine (Hatton) Plumlee on a farm on the Brazos River in Dennis, Texas. She was wed to Bill Marney on December 30, 1950 in Hope, Arkansas and were married over 67 years.

Marita was a self-taught artist, sound technician, interior designer, political activist, cook and baker, as well as a business owner and prayer warrior. Marita and Bill were founding members of the Wise County Republican Party. She also was a founding member of the Bridgeport Art Club. Bill and Marita were members of The Glory Express, a southern gospel singing group where she learned how to run the sound board as they traveled the country. Marita loved being a part of the community and school activities.  The Glory Express members were heavily involved in the Mommas and Poppas variety show tradition to raise money for the Bridgeport Band Boosters. She was a faithful Christian and spent many hours in prayers groups and Bible Studies. She and Bill also loved being camp counselors at Falls Creek Baptist Camp. She taught art classes and had an interior design business. She also taught school at Christian Heritage School at Faith Temple Church. The greatest legacy of Bill and Marita is their family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, FH, Billy Wayne, and Adrian; sister, Barbara June; and granddaughters, Emily Logan and Neely Graves.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband of 67 years, Bill Marney of Bridgeport; her daughters, Carolyn McComis and husband Keith, Toni Logan and husband Brad, Teresa Graves and husband Greg, all of Bridgeport; son, Scott Marney of Lewisville and Eric Marney and wife Shannon of Boyd; her grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Jared, Rachel, Aaron, Michelle, Jordan, Gideon, Bekah, Hannah, Nathan, Nikki, Nolan, Nevan, Elisha, Reagan, Joseph, and Benjamin; her great grandchildren, Aidan, Abigail Rae, Ashlynn Mae, Gunner, Gannon, Katelyn, Jackson, Abigail and Isabel; her sister, Peggy Hartsell and husband Tommy of Nocona; her brother, Sherrian Plumlee of Bridgeport; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
