Doris Laverne (Chandler) Barrett, 96, died April 21, 2022, after a brief illness.
She was born August 24, 1925, in Bowie, Texas to Elvin Curtis “Dick” and Mamie Alta (McLendon) Chandler. The family moved to Decatur and she graduated from Decatur High School. She married Martin Douglas Barrett on Jan. 6, 1945. For the remainder of their lives, they lived on their family farm which had been settled by Mr. Barrett’s grandfather.
Mrs. Barrett had been a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church since her marriage. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Decatur Garden Club.
Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and sisters and brothers in law, Rayford and Francis Thompson and J.M. and Pat Morris.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and Jim Stewart of Plano, TX, Wanda and F.C. Lasater of Longmont, CO, and Chanda and Mark Smith of Celina, TX; grandchildren, Gwen and Matt Byerly of Johnstown, CO, Martin Lasater of Longmont, CO, and Scott Lasater of Longmont, CO; five great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Larry Lighthill of Longview, TX, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur. Services will follow at 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Donations may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church or the Wise Area Relief Mission in Decatur, Texas.
