Newark ~ Irene C. Sanderson, 97, a homemaker, went to be with our Lord Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in Decatur.

Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017 at Newark Church of Christ in Newark with burial in Aurora Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

Mike Boaldin and John Henderson will officiate. Pallbearers include Ronnie Sanderson, Virgle Sanderson Jr., Stan Sanderson, Joel Bricker, James Burkett, Brent Sanderson, Cameron Sanderson, and Jeffrey Sanderson.

Irene was born on May 5, 1919 to James and Celestie (Deathrage) Norwood in Knox County. She was united in marriage to Eugene C. Sanderson on January 22, 1938 in Seymour. Irene was a member of the Newark Church of Christ.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, sister, and friend. Irene was known as Mamaw not only to her own grandchildren, but most of all of the children in Newark. For many years she not only took care of her family, but was also a babysitter for numerous others. She was always so happy to see family and friends, and showed her sweet spirit through her warm and loving smile. While she had a great love for cooking, baking, and gardening her main passion was quilting. Most people that knew her, had a quilt hand made for them, by her. Irene loved her family, and truly enjoyed having all of them together for holidays, vacations and 42 tournaments.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene C. Sanderson; her son, James Joe Sanderson; her great grandson, Dylan Joseph Blair; her sister, Leona Jones; her brothers, Sammy, Roy, Alvin, Elmer, Earl Owen, Carl, and Joe Bob Norwood.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Virgle Sanderson of Newark; Clinton Sanderson and wife Mollie of Boyd, Gerald Sanderson and wife Jodi of Springtown, Ronald Sanderson and wife Sharon of Granbury, Mike Sanderson and wife Sharon of Haslet; her daughters, Billie Burkett and husband Billy of Jacksboro, Becky Bricker and husband Joey of Poolville; her daughter-in-law, Joann Sanderson of Graham; 18 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren and one on the way; her sisters, Neoma Henderson of Burleson, Lillie Etta Webb of Bennington, Oklahoma, Lois Riggs of Monroe, Oklahoma; her sister-in-law, Wanda Norwood of Bridgeport; her brother, Billie Norwood and wife Willie of Graham; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
